Password Security

There are several steps you can take to help keep your passwords secure.

Strong passwords

It is important to have strong passwords for all user accounts and to change your passwords on a regular basis.

Some things to keep in mind to create a strong password:

  • A minimum of 8 characters is recommended.
  • Doesn't contain your name or a word that can be easily associated with you (i.e. name of your pet, favorite sports team, hometown, etc.).
  • Contains uppercase and lowercase letters.
  • Uses at least one symbol or number.
  • Use the first letters of a phrase you can remember: “I sure do love Elon University!” becomes “IsdlEU!”
  • Never write your passwords down.
  • Never share your passwords with others.
  • Learn additional strategies from Microsoft.

Use multiple passwords

Losing the password to one account may not be a big deal, but what if that password is the same as your online banking password? Once sniffers discover one password, the first thing they do is try to plug it in at other sites. Use different passwords and logins for different sites. Particularly be sure to use different passwords for sensitive data (like banking and work email) from the ones you use for less secure sites.

Manually enter passwords

Do not allow your browser to automatically log in to sites. The minor inconvenience of having to manually enter your username and password could save you from identity theft or misuse.
